Volunteer with CAFE

Looking to gain experience, offer expertise or develop new skills at one of Calgary’s most established editing institutions? We’ve been going strong for almost 30 years and counting! The Calgary Association of Freelance Editors (CAFE) offer a variety of volunteer positions throughout each year.

Got a way with words? Are you a whiz with numbers? A natural leader? A WordPress aficionado? Explore our current opportunities below to expand your network, bolster your experience and connect to some pretty amazing creative professionals.

CAFE members and volunteers establish professional relationships in the freelance editing community, learn fascinating things and develop freelance businesses (though we’re not just freelance editors). Our organization encompasses a unique blend of freelance editors, in-house editors, writers, indexers, translators and other professionals (publicists, document managers and researchers to name a few). CAFE’s membership is a diverse group of people with editorial talents and expertise in a variety of media, genre and subject matter.


Grant Writer 

CAFE is seeking someone familiar with document management processes or RFPs to take the helm of this position. Your role is integral for new funding to support our mission, membership and objectives.

Our ideal candidate is someone who is…

  • organized and detail oriented
  • experienced with substantive/structural editing and technical writing
  • excellent at project coordination and time management
  • experienced in communications and grant writing


Membership & Volunteer Coordinator(s)

Are you a positive, organized and friendly person with a knack for communicating with large groups and managing a team of people? Put your powers to good use as the glue that keeps the CAFE membership together!  The Membership Coordinator is a member of the board and manages membership records, volunteer recruitment efforts and liaises with members and volunteers.

Our ideal candidate is someone who…

  • multitasks and stays on top of a high volume of correspondences
  • writes clear, up-beat, informative correspondence and copy
  • engages with our members and volunteers in a professional, friendly manner (familiarity with the Canadian Code for Volunteer Involvement is a plus!)
  • practices meticulous and accurate recording keeping and time management


Website Coordinator

Are you an inbox zero hero and digital mastermind? We’re looking for someone like you to stay on top of our digital presence, ensuring CAFE website content is up-to-date, accurate, timely and engaging. Responsibilities include publishing member profiles and other copy as well as guiding website design/redesign projects.

The Website Content Coordinator is an integral part of the communications team (social media, marketing, communications, membership coordinating), which is responsible for informing members and the public about CAFE programming, projects, publications and other goings-on. Basic training available. WordPress experience strongly preferred.

Our ideal candidate is someone who…

  • has strong project management skills
  • can work well in a team environment
  • is detail oriented
  • has experience updating websites (helpful but isn’t required)
  • has experience with website content editing (a plus!)


Event Coordinator(s) 

Are you a great party planner? Can’t help but pick the right venue and perfect catering? We’re looking for a brilliant event coordinator (or two!) to organize programs that cater to the interests and wellbeing of our membership. Programming involves planning and coordinating current and future seasonal activities.

Activities include but are not limited to: professional development (on-site workshops, online webinars), panel discussions (wellness experts, community professionals), roundtable discussions, tours of local institutions, hosting guest celebrity speakers, and profile-raising participation in community activities (past activities include the Wordfest Editor in Residence program and an editors’ panel at the When Words Collide festival).

  • experienced in event planning and working with vendors

  • a pro at budget management


Board Treasurer 

Are you a master number cruncher with a background in finance or math? This position requires accounting and financial skills. Ideally, you work collaboratively, and have some knowledge or experience of non-profit organizations.

Our ideal candidate is someone who can…

  • manage a budget and provide quarterly financial status reports
  • complete an annual financial report to be delivered at the association’s AGM
  • manage the association’s income, expenses and petty cash
  • process membership renewals and member event attendance fees


Director(s) at Large

Looking for a great way to learn about CAFE, gain experience working on a non-profit board, and learn the ins and outs of the editing and writing community? If getting involved with a variety of activities (programs, events, committees, publications) appeals to you, consider joining the board as a Director at Large!

This is a flexible position—perfect if you want to contribute on a board level but don’t quite know where your skills fit. The position can be tailored to particular strengths and interests as they align with the needs of the membership and association.

Our ideal candidate is someone who can…

  • offer key skills for CAFE-related programming and goals (events, publications, research, networking)
  • find their passion and commit to or lead a CAFE project/committee
  • attend board meetings and provide common sense input and know-how for board decisions on behalf of members
